PHOTO OF THE DAY

The beauty never changes as todays photo gives us an amazing perspectuve from the fall to the kneepaddle in the foreground. It still captures a moment where we all share the stoke. Also a little shout out to Kelly Slater for his perfect scoring 10 yesterday in Fiji. The guy still amazes us all.

Last night I edited a little clip with my interview with Photographer Jim Russi. As Jim explains how Dan Merkel helped him out and showed him the ropes of the North Shore. Jim arrived to the North Shore in the late 70's and has been there ever since capturing amazing images for over 30 years. Therefore the photo posted today is a Merkel shot. aka Man Mountain.

Here is Russi on Merkel.

Here is a classic shot of Shaun Tomson and his quiver on the North Shore. The year was 1975 and photographer Dan Merkel was capturing history. Dan today just had a recent cover shot of Dane proving that he still has an amazing eye.

Here is a great shot of MR on a big sunset day. I believe that this shot was done by photographer Dan Merkel who I spoke to yesterday who is recovering from eye surgery. Let all wish Dan a speedy recovery so he can continue to do what he does best and thats capturing images that inspire us all.

Thanks Dan.

PHOTO OF THE DAY

Sunset Beach shot by a young Dan Merkel in 1971. Good swell, less crowds, and even party waves.
Surfers?

Reno Abellira Yes, that's me and Jeff Hakman, we did about 2-3 go behind turns on the face...this is when you could trust that they knew what they were doing, whether in front of or behind you.

Early Dan Merkel. Shot from Shore 1971-72

Here are some images from early days of Dan Merkel. This was only the beginning of what was to come from this photographer.

Dan Merkel checking out Backdoor as swell arrives

Dan Merkel is waiting for his moment to strike. Dan is extremely picky about his conditions before pulling out his panoramic camera to capture images on the the North Shore. He has arrived o the North Shore with 100 rolls of film allowing only for 4 images per roll which is a lot different then a Canon 7d or 5d shooting at multiple frames per second. This is what a professional is. This is FILM and Dan should return home with the only PANORAMICS being captured.
